POWERHOUSE

ABOUT:

PowerHouse is developing a mobile, retractable, plug-and-play solar array — it’s solar in a box. Our technology disrupts the notion that solar power requires a large, expensive, bespoke installation such as a rooftop solar array. The challenges posed by rooftop installations impede many homeowners from adopting solar; furthermore, they render solar power completely inaccessible to renters, both residential and commercial. We strive to democratize solar by building an appliance for consumer use that can also scale for commercial and development applications. Our compact, mobile solar microgrid features the equivalent of a 4kW photovoltaic array, with the ease of plug-and-play functionality. Our unit is modular and can be scaled for demand, up to large coordinated deployments across parking lots or disused agricultural land. As a self-contained appliance, our unit is ideal not only for homes and businesses but also for areas with unreliable or nonexistent grid connectivity, lending itself to important applications in development and disaster relief. We envision a world of distributed, hyperlocal generation in which consumers and communities control their own energy destinies.

TEAM:

Joey Fiore, S'10

Staring at the vast retail parking spaces rendered empty during lockdowns, Joey had decided to leave his role at Netflix spearheading the development of the solutions engineering program, and get back to his roots in environmentalism. Growing up with his brother Sam in Central Massachusetts, their formative years were spent between nature and supporting master mechanic Joe Sr.’s various creative projects. The former forged a lifelong passion for protecting the planet, while the latter instilled a healthy distrust for the status quo, in the built environment and beyond. During his time at Northeastern, Joey served as the university’s first directly elected Student Body President, and helped lead various climate related initiatives, before co-founding the cornerstone of Northeastern’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, the IDEA business accelerator. From there, he spent the next 10 years between D.C., Boston, and L.A., working at the intersection of technology, science, and media.

Arminé Nalbandian, SSH'08

Arminé Nalbandian is a public policy leader with more than a decade of experience advising governments and organizations on social policy and economic development strategies. Before joining PowerHouse, she served as the Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Policy to the New South Wales Premier in Australia. Her policy experience spans various countries, with roles as a US Fulbright Scholar, an economic development advisor to the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, managing place-based economic development initiatives at the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia, and advising two Massachusetts governors. Arminé graduated summa cum laude as a Presidential Scholar from Northeastern University in Boston. She holds a Master of Science in International Development from the London School of Economics as a Luys Scholar, and a Master of Commerce in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Sydney as a Business Leaders Scholar.

Miguel Trindade Deramo, SSH'09

A national security and foreign policy professional, Miguel began his career with the Department of State as a diplomat before joining the Department of Homeland Security as an intelligence analyst. In that role he led the integration of multilingual open-source data and social-media mining into analytical and targeting processes. He holds degrees in international relations and Islamic studies.

Sam Fiore, MCPHS'11

Resident inventor and technical lead Sam blends the shared Fiore approach to 1st principles with a holistic view from the nexus of disciplines. Doctor of Pharmacy, carpenter, mechanic and fabricator, for the past 5 years he’s applied an intrinsic command of the made world to engineer deeper connections with the natural. Most recently, Sam completed his second “muni” conversion, transforming a municipal vehicle into an off-grid solar luxury RV. First a city-bus, before a heavy-duty ambulance, their adventures, and Sam’s nature photography, can be followed @live.free.or.BUSt. Prior to PowerHouse, he’s honed his mastery of the trades across home builds, bespoke motorcycles, custom fiberglass, leather, and steel, and more, all featuring the attention to detail forged in his career in chemical compounding pharmacy.
